Global Database Analyst (Senior Associate)

Organization Profile:

Room to Read seeks to transform the lives of millions of children in developing countries by focusing on literacy and gender equality in education. Working in collaboration with local communities, partner organizations and governments, we develop literacy skills and a habit of reading among primary school children, and support girls to complete secondary school with the relevant life skills to succeed in school and beyond.


We are non-governmental, non-religious and work with many local NGOs and community based organizations to implement our programs. We currently work in Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Laos, Nepal, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Vietnam, and Zambia – countries with a desperate lack of resources to educate their children. Since our inception, Room to Read’s worldwide team has impacted over 7 million children by constructing more than 1,600 schools, establishing over 15,000 libraries, publishing 800 new children’s book titles in 11 local languages, and rewarding over 20,000 girls with long-term, holistic scholarships.


Room to Read has an annual budget of approximately US$43.7 million and our global staff numbers over 500. Our global headquarters is located in San Francisco, and we have smaller fundraising offices in Delhi, New York, Hong Kong, London, Mumbai, Sydney, and Tokyo. We have an Asia Regional Office located in New Delhi and program offices in Colombo, Dar es Salaam, Dhaka, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Kathmandu, Lusaka, New Delhi, Pretoria, Phnom Penh, and Vientiane.


Position Overview:
 

This position is part of the Information Technology team and is a full-time member of the Global Office (GO). This position must be located in one of Room to Read’s main offices in Asia or Africa. The Global Database Analyst (GDA) is responsible for providing worldwide / organization-wide support to all Global Solutions Database (GSD) users. The GDA serves as the “voice” for the Country Offices (COs), helping to ensure that GSD changes and solutions are made with consideration to all staff. The position reports directly to the Senior IT Applications Manager, based in San Francisco. 


Duties & Responsibilities:

Support

·        Assist users with GSD questions, problems and ideas.  Use our IT ticket management application to manage and track each request.  Research answers and guide requests through to resolution, providing professional, timely and friendly support.

 

·        Provide support to users via email, in-person, phone and/or web-conferencing to assist with questions and problems and develop capacity for the future.

 
 

·        Develop deep knowledge of Programs GSD and our Programs at Room to Read. In future, develop deep knowledge of other GSD applications and departments.

 

·        Support Country Office Power Users (1 per CO).  Includes providing on-boarding training to new Power Users, periodic check-ins to support and increase capacity and other responsibilities as needed.


·        Provide GSD Orientation to new Regional Office (RO) staff.

Salesforce.com Administration

·        Perform daily GSD User Administration tasks to support our growing and changing workforce.  Includes setting up and disabling GSD accounts, maintaining GSD User accounts, and other user administration tasks.

 

·        Perform periodic data management tasks to support proper visibility and access to information in the GSD.  Includes transferring ownership of records (upon hire/termination of employees), deleting records marked as duplicates, supporting CO users on addressing data quality problems and other data management tasks.

·        Develop knowledge of Salesforce.com Administration including security, list views, reports, dashboards and more. Perform additional Salesforce.com Administration tasks as assigned by the Sr IT Applications Manager.

Business Analysis

·        Serve as the representative for Country Office GSD users and partner with the Global Program Operations Associate (GPOA) to maintain and update the GSD with solutions that consider and support all staff.

 

·        Evaluate problems to understand the root cause and suggest ways to prevent it in the future; proactively identify areas for improvement.

 

·        Maintain regular communication with Sr. IT Applications Manager and GPOA to share observations and feedback.


Training

·        Oversee Programs GSD training needs for Country Offices.

·        Train Power Users to deliver Programs GSD trainings to their respective country offices.

·        Deliver in-person multi-day trainings at country offices (to help onboard a Power User, to support country offices temporarily without a Power User, etc).

·        Deliver topic-focused trainings via web conference.

Qualifications:

Required:

·        Working knowledge of databases and data models. Proficient in data management and developing reports.  Experience with Salesforce.com a plus.

·        Excellent customer service skills.

·        Strong organizational skills and demonstrated attention to detail.

·        Ability to work independently.

·        Demonstrated ability to identify problems and inconsistencies, analyze the situation and suggest ideas for improvement.

·        Consistently responsive.

·        Ability to track multiple tasks across multiple projects.

·        Experience collecting and documenting business requirements for applications.

·        Experience training groups on technical subjects.

·        Proficient in Microsoft Excel.

·        Prior business application or technical support experience.

·        Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.  Comfortable communicating with colleagues across all levels of the organization.

·        Prior success working closely and building relationships with diverse groups of people.

·        Ability and desire to travel to Country Offices in Asia and Africa to support training needs (≈10-20% time)

·        Prior experience in a fast-paced, growth-oriented global or regional organization

·        Proven track record of achieving results

Preferred:

·        Effectiveness in working or volunteering in a non-profit organization that is focused on maintaining high quality work and low overhead
